What is Healthy Kids?

Healthy Kids is Medicaid.  Healthy Kids is for children 18 years of age and under, and for pregnant women of any age.  A child/pregnant woman can have other health insurance and also have Healthy Kids Medicaid.  Eligibility is determined on income.  Healthy Kids is free, but if you are age 21 and older, there may be small co-pays for some services.

What is MIChild?

MIChild is not Medicaid.  MIChild is a health coverage program using State and Federal funds. If a child is over the income guidelines for Medicaid but within the MIChild income guidelines, and if there is no other comprehensive/employer based health insurance, and the child has been without comprehensive/employer based health insurance for 6 months, the child is then considered for MIChild eligibility. The cost for MIChild is $10 a month no matter how many children are insured.

What services do MIChild and Healthy Kids provide?

The following services are provided by both insurances:

Ambulance, dental services, doctor visits and health check-ups, immunizations (shots), lab and x-ray tests, vision care, well-child visits, and other medical services.

How does one apply? 

Application can be made by:

2.  A paper application can be obtained by calling the Shiawassee County Health Department
3. Call 1-888-988-6300 and ask for an application
4. Go to www.michigan.gov/mdhhs and print an application.

Call the Shiawassee County Health Department at 989-743-2356 or 1-800-859-4229, press “0” at the menu option for the main reception office. Hours are 8 am – 12 pm and 1 pm – 5 pm. Closed on week-ends and legal holidays.
